Dr. Willie Parker, abortionist, professed Christian, and author of the newly released book, “Life’s Work: A Moral Argument for Choice,” has stated his belief that as an abortion provider, he is doing God’s work. He has no qualms about using the words Christian and abortionist in the same sentence and really believes one can be both. To any pro-life person, however, a Christian abortionist is the ultimate oxymoron.
It has not always been this way for Dr. Parker, a trained obstetrician who works at the only remaining clinic that provides abortions in the state of Mississippi. Due to his religious upbringing, he used to refuse to perform abortions. But after working in Hawaii in the early 2000s for a clinic that stopped providing abortions, his views started to change.
He began to believe that as a Christian, it was his moral duty to address injustice and oppression and to continue to provide abortion services for the poor women that were among the indigent people who came to the outpatient clinic where he worked. Along with the idea that restrictions on abortions is comparative to slavery, Dr. Parker also states his decision to become an abortion provider was inspired by the sermon, “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop,” by Martin Luther King, Jr.
Dr. Parker came to believe that as a Christian, it is his purpose to help women in need. He says, “The protesters say they’re opposed to abortion because they’re Christian. It’s hard for them to accept that I do abortions because I’m a Christian.”
All of this has led to him becoming an advocate for women’s reproductive rights. The former medical director at Planned Parenthood in the Washington D.C. area went as far as quitting all obstetric services to focus solely on performing abortions, of which he does 1,000 a year. In his entire career, he has performed 10,000 abortions. While many of his patients choose to have an abortion because they are living in poverty, some of them get an abortion for other reasons. Like the 21-year-old runner who needed to perform a faster 800-meter run in order to qualify for the Rio Olympics.
Like many pro-choice Christians, Dr. Parker has stated that the word abortion does not appear anywhere in the Bible. As a way to justify their position, many pro-choice Christian denominations say the same thing. They also state that because the Bible does not say anything about when life begins, and never mentions the process of conception or pregnancy, they are essentially stating that abortions are okay in God’s eyes.
Many pro-choice Christians, including Dr. Parker, also embrace the pro-abortion argument for bodily autonomy. This idea states that an unborn child doesn’t have a fundamental right to exist until it no longer needs to depend upon its mother’s body for survival. This argument doesn’t take into account the scientific fact that life begins at conception.
However, many Christians agree that life at any stage, is sacred. They do not have to read the word “abortion” in the Bible to figure out what God thinks about the idea of killing an unborn child in its mother’s womb. The idea of doing so leaves many of them scratching their heads and asking, “What part of ‘thou shalt not kill’ do pro-choice Christians not understand?”
Also, maybe Christians who believe abortion is okay have missed these other life-affirming passages:
You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it. Psalm 139:13-15
So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Genesis 1:27
Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live! Deuteronomy 30:19
Even in the face of the bodily autonomy argument, there is no denying that at six weeks gestation, a baby’s heart is beating 80 times per minute. By nine weeks, all of the baby’s basic physiology has formed. Each week, another stage of development has occurred until finally, at 39 weeks, the baby is considered full term. But no matter how many weeks gestation a baby in the womb is, once an abortion has been performed, life has ended.
