Unless quarterback Colin Kaepernick discontinues his anti-America rhetoric, he will probably never return to the NFL. In his latest stunt, Kaepernick posted a controversial tweet that compared cops to fugitive slave patrols. His tweet was in response to the recent news that Minnesota police officer, Jeronimo Yanez, was found not guilty in the shooting death of Philando Castile.
Kaepernick posted a photo on Twitter of a police badge next to a “fugitive slave patrol” badge, along with the words “You can’t ignore your history – always remember who they are.” He had captioned the photo saying, “A system that perpetually condones the killing of people, without consequence, doesn’t need to be revised, it needs to be dismantled!”
The slave patrol badge Kaepernick referred to was presumably worn by those who captured and killed slaves in the south that were caught when trying to run away. The Twitter community responded to the tweet by criticizing Kaepernick, telling him he will never play football in this country again.
One tweet said, “Do you even care that cops are getting ambushed and killed because people are being taught to hate cops? Most of them are good people.”
Referring to Kaepernick’s tweet, sports pundit Clay Travis had this to say, “Comparing modern day police officers, and I believe there’s somewhere around a million law enforcement officers in this country, to slave patrol back in the days of slavery, to me, Colin Kaepernick is never playing in the NFL again.”
Kaepernick, originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin was born in 1987. His birth mother was a 19-year old white woman whose African American partner had left before Colin’s birth. A white couple then adopted him. Kaepernick first drew attention and criticism in 2016 during a preseason game when he refused to stand during the national anthem. At the time, he was competing for the starting quarterback position for the San Francisco 49ers.
Nothing was said by his teammates as he visibly stayed seated during the playing of the “Star Spangled Banner.” The firestorm began when a photo that was simply meant to capture the moment, and had nothing to do with the fact Kaepernick was sitting, was shared on Twitter. It didn’t take long for the photo to gain national attention.
When asked why he didn’t stand, Kaepernick responded, “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color. To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”
Eventually, instead of blatantly sitting it out during the anthem, he began to take a knee, and if that weren’t bad enough, other NFL players began joining him. Some of the players include Jeremy Lane of the Seattle Seahawks, Brandon Marshall of the Denver Broncos, and Arian Foster, Michael Thomas, Kenny Stills and Jelani Jenkins all of the Miami Dolphins. Instead of sitting or kneeling during the national anthem, some NFL players began raising their fists – a salute that represents “Black Power.”
According to the NFL, “Players are encouraged but not required to stand during the playing of the national anthem.”
While they had a right to do so, some say their actions did more harm than good.
At the time of the controversy, columnist Michael Lanagan said, “Colin Kaepernick’s actions are a misguided effort that only furthers racial division in our country. I suppose we cannot blame him though. Sitting is what he does best, and he will be doing it all season.”
At the time, Kaepernick had also called then-presidential candidate, Donald Trump, “openly racist.”
Trump responded to Kaepernick’s comments and actions saying, “I think it’s personally not a good thing, I think it’s a terrible thing. And, you know, maybe he should find a country that works better for him. Let him try, it won’t happen.”
Kaepernick continued to kneel through the playing of the national anthem throughout the entire season. Earlier this year his days of playing for the 49ers came to an end and he is now a free agent. In May, Kaepernick was reportedly working out every day in the hopes of being invited to some team’s training camp. After his Twitter post however, he is not doing himself any favors in getting back to the NFL.
