Here’s What Carrie Underwood Prayed After Suffering 3 Miscarriages

Last week 35-year-old American country music singer and songwriter Carrie Underwood sat down with CBS Sunday Morning to talk about her new album, Cry Pretty. The album–on course to hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart–contains songs which are noticeably heavier than usual for the musician. When asked to explain, Underwood shared something many–if not most–of her fans wouldn’t know.

The singer–who usually prefers to keep her private life private–explained that she suffered three miscarriages in just over a year and, understandably, the pain and loss affected her faith.

Carrie Underwood’s Faith

Underwood has long been accepted by the Christian community as a fellow believer.

Having grown up in a single stoplight town in Oklahoma, she got her start singing in the church choir. She and her family attended the First Free Will Baptist Church. When she eventually found success as the winner of the fourth season of American Idol, she was just 22 years old.

The win launched her music career nearly overnight, helping her win other coveted awards and opportunities around the world. Doors opened that might never have opened for the young, self-coined country girl otherwise.

Remarkably, perhaps, her newfound fame and fortune did not discourage her from taking a strong stand on issues of faith. Much of her music talks about her belief and hope in God. Additionally, in 2010, she married NHL player Mike Fisher, who is also known for being open about his faith. Together they have lived a faithful, Christian marriage in the spotlight.

But then life threw them a curve ball.

Carrie Underwood’s Losses

Last November, Underwood tripped and fell on some steps outside her Nashville home, leaving her with a broken wrist as well as cuts that results in over 40 stitches in her face. This freak accident resulted in a noticeable change in Underwood’s appearance. But, no doubt, the worst pain Underwood suffered in the past year was left unseen, deep in her heart.

“2017 just wasn’t how I imaged it,” an emotional Underwood said on Sunday. “I had kind of planned that 2017 was going to be the year that I work on new music and I have a baby. We got pregnant early in 2017 and it didn’t work out. We got pregnant again in the spring and it didn’t work out. Got pregnant again in early 2018 and it didn’t work out. So at that point,” the singer said, “What’s the deal?”

All this while Underwood was working on her album, Cry Pretty.

Carrie Underwood’s Prayer

Like so many believers, Underwood said she was always afraid to be angry with God about the difficult situations in her life. Especially after she had received the blessings of a great husband, a great career, and a healthy little boy–Isaiah Michael Fisher, born in 2015. “Really, what can I complain about? I can’t,” Underwood said with tears streaming down her face.

But then Underwood got mad.

One night, after suffering what she thought was yet another miscarriage, she prayed to God like never before. Her husband was away for the evening and she decided to snuggle with little Isaiah who was already asleep. Lying next to him, she wept and prayed. In her words:

“I was like, ‘Why, Lord, do I keep getting pregnant if I can’t have a kid? What is this? Shut the door. Do something. Either shut the door or let me have a kid. And, for the first time, I feel like I actually told God how I felt. And I feel like we’re supposed to do that.’ ”

That was on a Saturday. On Monday, Underwood went to the doctor to confirm her miscarriage from over the weekend, and the most incredible thing happened–

“They told me everything was great.”

While she believes God always hears the prayers of His children, she took comfort in the reality that He heard her over the weekend.

Carrie Underwood’s Plans

As of now, Underwood plans to tour this spring, promoting the album that was shaped by her pain. And Lord-willing, she will do so with her new baby in tow.

So after recently suffering three miscarriages, Underwood credits her husband with helping her keep her faith.

During the interview with CBS Sunday Morning, Underwood said it best when she said, “You’ve got to have some downs to realize when you’re up.” For now, she’s had a recent strings of downs, but as every Christian knows … Sunday’s coming.
