Donald Trump has spoken openly on how it would be good for not only the United States but the world to have a favorable relationship with Russia. They are a super power just by their sheer land mass and population. But in addition to that they have many natural resources we could benefit from as well as being a good ally in the fight against ISIS. Over the last eight years though, this relationship has deteriorated dramatically.
The breakdown of the relationship can be accounted to many things. Russia has led several unsanctioned attacks into former Russian satellite nations, which Obama has spoken out against. Obama’s predecessor, George W. Bush, didn’t have that great of a connection either. In fact, since the ‘80’s all of our former presidents have had strained or no relationship at all with the former Soviet Union.
Now, Donald wants to bridge the gap and work together on a host of different deals, which would be good for both countries. However, the road ahead will not be easy.
During the first few years following the fall of the Soviet Union, Russia did not have a strong national direction or leader to turn to. Vladimir Putin has input stability into the nation but as a former KGB officer, he also took the nation back in many ways into its pre-Soviet fall state (including the attacks on these former Soviet satellite nations).
The very notion of Putin being a former KGB officer put many in Washington on edge, and many of his actions over the years have not helped. So while both Trump and Putin seem to be open to working together on different deals, it likely will prove tough to hash out specifics.
