One of President-Elect Donald Trump’s key promises of his election campaign was to bring jobs back to American shores that had been threatened with being outsourced or perhaps had already departed.
Trump wasted no time effecting this effort, traveling to Indiana in early December to wrest a deal from Carrier, the American air conditioner manufacturer, that could have sent 1,500 U.S. jobs south of the border to Mexico. Thanks to Trump, at least 800 of those jobs will be staying in Indiana. And Trump — despite not being in office yet — is just getting started.
As he explained to a crowd in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the incoming president wants to put two firm principles in place for the U.S. business marketplace: hire American and buy American.
Trump’s goal is for American money to stay in America and for more Americans to get and keep high-paying production jobs instead of scrambling for low-wage service sector jobs that President Obama has loudly boasted of increasing.
Through a combination of incentives and the possibility of protectionist tariffs where necessary, Trump will use both carrots and sticks to persuade American business that its workplaces and marketplaces belong here in this country, rather than overseas.
